Car park Westpark / Jahrhunderthalle Bochum

With the planned multi-storey car park, visitors to the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum will have convenient parking in the immediate vicinity of the venue. As part of the inner city west, the multi-storey car park must meet the high urban and architectural quality requirements of its surroundings. In order to guarantee this, the Entwicklungsgesellschaft Ruhr-Bochum mbH (EGR), as the future owner and operator of the parking garage, launched a realization competition at the beginning of 2009.

In 2012, dip then built a multi-storey car park with 341 parking spaces on five half-levels.

The design for the multi-storey car park consists of an efficiently organized system construction made of steel and a tailor-made frame made of solid brick walls, which takes on the qualities of the environment in its rough appearance and industrial character. On both sides of the entrance there are striking and precise, large-scale masonry openings. The building corners are massive and underline the image of the supporting structure in a landscape terrace. In order to meet the requirements of a large open garage, the entire enclosure along the east, west and south facades is designed as perforated masonry. The perforation is used for natural ventilation of the car park. Together with the large openings on the entrance sides and the light and air shaft arranged in the middle over the entire length of the parking garage, an opening proportion of over a third of the facade surface is achieved, thus ensuring adequate cross ventilation. The perforation creates an interesting play of light and shadow inside the building on sunny days.
